A user’s guide to monkey business
by Bernhard Leopold Topf
To the great people of Tsukuba, who are none of the below.
Prologue
M: So who do you think would be interested in your script?
B: Hmm, all kinds of folk, really. Well, it would be good if they had some basic knowledge on monkey business. And insights into German would be a plus, especially Bavarian German.
M: And it’s set in Japan..?
B: Yes, definitely, it would make a lot more sense to those who’ve been to Japan already. I mean, if someone knows Tsukuba, then, hey, waouhh! Especially in comparison with French social and work ethics.
S: But it’s a thriller, isn’t it?
B: Hmm, weeell, not exactly. It’s more about monkey business, really. And it’s a true story.
M: So, if we want to sell this manuscript, then the target group would be English-speaking Bavarian virologists with a professional experience in France, who have recently been to Tsukuba, but not necessarily like thrillers. Is that what you have in mind?
B: Err, yes. Do you think there’s a big market for it?
